In this beautifully photographed and unusually edited approach to a documentary about the lives of diverse peoples in Senegal, West Africa, the filmmaker challenges traditional ethnographic studies in a variety of ways. Stressing “a complicity of interaction between the film and the spectator,” she makes women the focus--but not the object--of her study. A film that is alternately moving and jarring, as it is intended to be.
