Rebellion of Japan (Utage)

To round out our series, we have selected a film from the PFA collection, based on the novel by Yutaka Tonegawa. (The film is a preview of a tribute to Heinosuke Gosho to be presented later this year in conjunction with the Japan Society and The Museum of Modern Art.) Set against a fateful incident in Japanese history-the unsuccessful February 1936 military coup staged by a group of disgruntled young army officers reacting to the gloom and anxiety of the economic depression-Rebellion of Japan depicts an ill-fated love affair between one of the rebels and the young, amiable sister of his friend.
