Recent Films by Stan Brakhage

Stan Brakhage's search for film equivalents and metaphors for vision led him to call his films documentaries. But as he explores the parameters of "seeing" he also pushes the possibilities of film language, using visible splices, a mobile camera, musical rhythms and an autobiographical mode. One easily loses count of the number of films Brakhage has created; the Canyon Cinema catalog lists over l50 titles. The last few years have been a period of intense productivity for Brakhage. Tonight's selection of recent work ranges from the most recent of his Faust series, to the lyrical Marilyn's Window and abstract Babylon Series and the intricately edited Vision in Meditation. He journeys back to childhood, into legend and ancient times, inspired perhaps by times when visions were believed, interpreted, enjoyed. The resulting "documents" remind us that to see clearly is a relatively recent value, and represents only the "tip" of vision's potential. Brakhage's is perhaps a romantic endeavor, and yet one which continues to influence and inspire audience and filmmakers alike --Kathy Geritz
