Recent French Avant-Garde Films

Cécile Fontaine is one of the most exciting experimental filmmakers working in France today. Her most recent film, Silver Rush, was presented in this year's New York Film Festival. "I mainly work cameraless, chemically and physically manipulating the emulsion layers of entire found or given films of various kinds (commercial, feature, documentary, anonymous home movies and my father's), various formats (Super–8mm, 8mm, 9mm, 16mm, 35mm), and various stocks (B&W, Color), changing their appearance and form through tape editing and collaging. I have chosen to present my work with films by other filmmakers living in France and working in a completely different manner. I have selected films entirely created with the camera or the optical printer, using personal images (with the exception of Yann Beauvais's filming of manipulated postcards)-works that I admire for their conception in the total "darkness" of the camera, the film invisible, as opposed to mine where seeing and handling the images of the film are the basis of the work.
