Recent French Experimental Cinema
"Yann Beauvais presents a program of his and other recent French experimental films. In an essay accompanying a program of his films at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, his work was described as extending the concept of 'expanded cinema' beyond the West Coast notion of a cinema linked to an expanded consciousness, and British filmmakers' expanded use of the properties of the medium itself. Many of Beauvais' films literally expand the image by using two-screen projection. Our program includes two of his single-projection films, Sans Titre 84 and Amoroso. Sans Titre 84 takes a familiar image and systematically deconstructs its order to construct a new image. Photographs of the Arch of Triumph taken from multiple vantage points are intercut so that different points-of-view appear in twelve alternating bands. The Arch's monumentality, its historical weight, are at once minimized (as its identity literally breaks apart), and expanded (into a 'dance' of space and time, a game of lost and found identity)."
