Red Dust

This tropical melodrama was the “ladies film” of 1932--the erotic variety, as opposed to the more common tearjerkers. Jean Harlow's sense of humor and innocent vulgarity find perfect expression in the role of a sassy “tramp,” and Clark Gable's animal magnetism is as viscerally demonstrative here as that of Brando. Seen today, Red Dust is an invigorating example of Hollywood's lost ability to project the repressed sexuality of middle class fantasies with honesty, humor and taste.
