The Red Squirrel

A failed rock musician contemplating suicide rescues a young woman thrown from her motorcycle and suffering from amnesia. Both are given a new life as he proceeds to reinvent her as the object of his need and desires, against the backdrop and strange community of the Red Squirrel campsite in La Rioja. If The Red Squirrel hints of Vertigo, such a classic male investigation is questioned throughout by what the director has called "the ridicule of virility." "(In this) hybrid mix of thriller, comedy, melodrama and kidnap movie/love story, Medem takes a...playful...approach to questions of masculine/feminine as well as regional identity....In a love game of appearances and deceptions, seductions and rejections, this 'found' woman remains a mystery...and is finally unamenable to male control and possession." (Contemporary Spanish Cinema) "Audiences will admire The Red Squirrel for its inventive plot, its dazzling technique and its fine performances." (Sight & Sound) "Emma Suárez is magnificent in her portrayal of the woman who overcomes the possessive men in her life." (Mill Valley Film Festival)
