The Red Sweater

"Christian Ranucci was a young traveling salesman when he was arrested for the 1974 kidnap-murder of a young girl near Marseilles. Ranucci was tried, convicted and executed for the crime. Novelist and investigative reporter Gilles Perrault examined this case in detail and presented his thesis in a well-documented book. Ranucci's guilt was far from certain and the French court may have bowed to public opinion, suppressing contradictory evidence and witnesses in its haste to convict. Filmmaker Michel Drach recreates this case in a forceful, harrowing denunciation of French justice. Dramatically full and compelling, the film is directed with controlled anger and intelligence, and the performances of the excellent cast enhance the argument and the emotional content of this true story. The theme is controversial, but as an argumentative document this film stands as a strong case for reasoned justice."-Filmex
