This sea adventure and moral drama in the tradition of Mutiny on the Bounty also draws attention to the greedy overfishing that is destroying the Philippine archipelago's fragile coral reefs. Fredo (megastar Cesar Montano), an iron-willed, charismatic reef diver driven by personal demons, recruits divers, mostly boys from desperately poor families, to bring home the fish before Christmas. The crew lives in crowded, inhumane conditions and makes as many as eight dives a day, crushing the coral reef to stir up the fish, then driving them into nets. (In spectacular sequences, swarms of children plunge to the ocean bottom without scuba gear.) As Fredo becomes obsessed with profits, his young crew considers mutiny.
