On & Off the Res with Charlie Hill and The Laughing Club of India
Charlie Hill is a funny man. The fact that he is also Native American has played through his career as a stand-up comedian in ways both serendipitous and profound. Hill broke into show business at a pivotal time in American cultural politics, when ethnic stereotypes were being challenged on many fronts. In this review of his career to date, we are treated to quips, sketches, and stand-up routines from venues such as The Johnny Carson Show, The Richard Pryor Show, and Canadian TV. Appearances by Dick Gregory, Vine Deloria, and singer Floyd Westerman are noteworthy. Hill sees his mission, in part, as an attempt to "try to turn poison into medicine." That he does this by making people laugh is a testament both to Hill and, as he points out, to a long lineage of Amerind leaders, pranksters, and tricksters.
