The Residents' Freakshow CD-ROM, John Sanborn's Media Band and other works
John Sanborn and Cryptic Corporation's Homer Flynn in person Evolving technology-the videotape, the interactive laserdisc, the CD-ROM-has changed the way we see sound. And with the seeing has come innovative ways in which we can intervene in the reception of music. Tonight's program samples media that have been developed to present music affixed to visuals. Opening is Juan Downey's 1989 Bachdisc which allows viewers to select "chapters" from "Fugue #24 in B Minor" and create up to 144 different counterpoints. Renowned for his hi-tech agility, John Sanborn will demonstrate recent music-oriented projects made with software programs such as Quicktime, Premiere and Digital Film. Sanborn promises a glimpse of The Media Band, an interactive rock 'n' roll extravaganza. Topping the bill, Homer Flynn of the Cryptic Corporation will preview The Residents' Freakshow CD-ROM. Building animation around songs from the eponymous album, viewers navigate through an array of narrative possibilities. With this exciting CD-ROM, The Residents leap forward in their pioneering interpretations of popular music. To keep the joint jumping, music videos by Sanborn and The Residents will be screened, along with excerpts from the videodisc Devo: The Complete Truth About Devolution.-Steve Seid
