The Return of Sherlock Holmes

“Barrymore's (1922) Holmes had been a youthful one, and the next major Holmes was to maintain the tradition. Clive Brook was introduced to the role in 1929's The Return of Sherlock Holmes and thus became the first Holmes to talk on the screen.... Holmes aficionados are both a dedicated and insatiable lot, and their joy at being able to see this latest rediscovery will doubtless make up for the fact that it is hampered by the usual problems of early sound, a director somewhat out of his element, and unusually hurried and cramped production facilities - it was filmed partly on board ship, en route to New York, and then finished off in a small New York studio. A major compensation is our ability to show an original 35mm nitrate print.” --W.K.E.
