Admission Free! Saturday Night at the Apollo Theater, Harlem, in the mid-fifties iswonderfully captured in these variety revues which combine jazz, swing,rhythm-and-blues, and rock'n'roll as well as performances by dancers and acts byhumorists. Among the many famous musicians included in Rhythm and Blues Revue areCount Basie, Lionel Hampton, Nat "King" Cole, Sarah Vaughn, The Larks,Martha Davis, Ruth Brown, and Amos Milburn. Rock'n'Roll and Basin Street Revuesfeature some of the above plus Duke Ellington, Joe Turner, The Delta Rhythm Boys,Dinah Washington, and others. The dancers include Little Buck and The Businessmenof Rhythm, and the variety shows are spiced with the humor of Nipsy Russell andFreddy and Flo. The films were shot in black and white, however Rock'n'Roll Revueis printed on toned color stock which is now pink. The actual acts were recreatedin a studio across the street from the Apollo and intercut with footage of theApollo!nbsp;audience.
