Richard Pryor -- Live in Concert
“Jeff Margolis' Richard Pryor--Live in Concert (1979) reveals the completely uninhibited Pryor as a comic genius and not just the fringe comedian he was able to reveal previously in the circumscribed mass media. His language is foul and cleansing at the same time, because with Pryor the dirt is a bass accompaniment to shrieking riffs of pain and fear and self-recognition. After a ‘Get Whitey' opening that establishes the total blackness of his humor, Pryor bursts through to universality by treating the most horrifying experiences as part of nature's dialectic. He is as outrageous as Lenny Bruce but infinitely more graceful as a performer, particularly when parodying his heart in the midst of a seizure or when slinking across a stage into the raunchy precincts of the animal kingdom. Pryor is an uncanny mimic with a finely tuned ear to the nuances of power struggles in speech, and in unexpurgated form his raging unconscious is triumphantly unlocked.” Village Voice
