Riverglass: A River Ballet in Four Seasons

Water is an ideal subject for the moving-image artist. Its ever-mutable surface luxuriates in the camera's eye, and few things bear their voluminous presence with such majestic transparency. Slovenian artist Andrej Zdravic brings us a magical underwater realm via a pristine river, the Socca, that flows from the Julian Alps of his homeland. Coursing pearlescent bubbles, shifting shades of aquamarine, the sun poking at the river's membrane, stones that roll and roil boundlessly-Riverglass is all supple movement, a lyrical river dance set to the music of environmental sounds. Recorded over four years, this surging work shows us why that elixir, water, has retained a sublime mystery in its ineffable depths.
