Romeo and Juliet in the Snow (Romeo und Julia iim Schnee)
Lubitsch's last short comedy (after this he made mostly large-scale features), Romeo and Juliet in the Snow is a Shakespeare-inspired farce set in a Bavarian village. As the film opens, two feuding families, the Capulethofers and the Montekugerls, are seeking a resolution to a dispute. The judge places sausages on either side of the scale of justice and pronounces both families equally in the right--and therefore equally in the wrong. Meanwhile, Julia, the daughter of one family, becomes infatuated with Romeo, the son of the rival family, after he throws a snowball at her. The rest, of course, is literary history, gone haywire.
