"Made by Siodmak, post-Hollywood and before his final years in Germany, The Rough and the Smooth was cut considerably for U.S. release. Our print is of the full British original, which at the time was awarded Britain's 'X' (adults only) certificate. Rather like Scarlet Street without the element of murder, it would work better as a noir if we cared a little more about the young man who is trapped by a temptress. The role cries out for a Mitchum, or at the very least a Richard Burton. Even with the 'X' the steamy and sleazy novel had to be toned down somewhat, but its atmospherics and its art direction pay off well." -William K. Everson
