Rudy Burckhardt's New York

"Rudy Burckhardt has referred to his moviemaking as 'a cinema of looking,' and in tonight's program of fiction and 'non-fiction' films, his look-attentive and affectionate-falls on New York City. When he takes to the streets-a voyeur, an explorer, a visual poet-his camera glances, stares, follows and lingers on faces, shopwindows, subways, the waterfront, and crowded streets. His New York is a New York of people and buildings, a city seen from the outside by an insider. And while his camera is aimed at the public, exposed side of the city, he gives us access to the private, personal world of his anonymous cast of characters. Although they are glimpsed but for a moment, we create a story from a sudden smile, stooped shoulders, whispered confidences. Through the years Burckhardt has often worked with other artists. His fiction films, mixtures of fanciful imaginings and documentary observation, were often collaborations; tonight's program includes films made with Joseph Cornell, Red Grooms and Yoshiko Chuma's School of Hard Knocks."
