Ruff Cut / Homage to R. Mutt
by Frank Gillette
This early black and white work by Gillette, whose multiple-channel work Aransas was recently on view in the Theater Gallery of the UAM, is one of the masterpieces of his single-channel works. A dense, heavily edited montage, the piece combines still-life studies with out-of-studio field material characteristic of his current work. The soundtrack, a mix of wild and rhythmic sounds, combines with the non-aligned imagery to produce a sense of the surreal.
