The Ruined Map (a.k.a. The Man without a Map)

A mod, modernist puzzle box and a riot of 1960s senses and sensibilities, Teshigahara's fourth collaboration with Abe and Takemitsu-and their first in color-was done for Shintaro Katsu's production company, and boasts Katsu himself (famous as Zatoichi, the blind swordsman) in a rare contemporary setting. With his shades, smokes, and sideburns (and amusingly undersized car), Katsu is searching for a missing man and oozing through society's underbelly with the sort of swinging private dick sleaze that would make Steve McQueen jealous. The missing man's wife is uncooperative; the brother-in-law winds up dead, and other leads go nowhere. But as Katsu continues the search, his life begins to resemble the missing man's, and his fate may wind up the same. Sarcastically filming his characters through their possessions (and their hair), Teshigahara makes Japanese modernism look even better in color. With Abe's abstract ruses and Takemitsu's typically otherworldly soundscapes, The Ruined Map is a chilled, extravagantly chic time capsule.-Jason Sanders
