Scandal

This film is an attack on the kind of yellow journalism which erupted in Japan at the end of the Occupation. Kurosawa was personally involved in a scandalous story at the time and his motivation for making the film may have been somewhat personal. The story involves a painter (Toshiro Mifune) who is slandered and his lawyer (Takashi Shimura) who almost ruins him. A timely film today, in this country as much as in Japan.

Scandal is repeated on Wednesday, April 25.
