The Scarlet Car and Victory
The Scarlet Car
“This Universal/Bluebird melodrama is of interest more for a relatively early appearance of Lon Chaney than for any inherent cinematic greatness. Although he had already appeared in over 100 films, Chaney was still relegated to bit parts--often unbilled--and barely attracted any critical attention. It would be another few years before Chaney would catch the public's eye with his powerful portrayals in The Miracle Man and The Penalty and several years before he would achieve true stardom. In this silly little curio about embezzling, Chaney plays an old man whose mind has snapped and he thinks he is Paul Revere! While it is certainly no classic, the film is fast-paced and it is utterly fascinating to watch Chaney in one of the few extant pictures from his six years and 100-plus films at Universal.” Jon Mirsalis
