Scenes in the Life of George Maciunas and Fluxus Films
Films by Carla Liss, George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, Paul Sharits, and others Carla Liss in Person (Zefiro Torna). Mekas's most recent diary film is comprised of footage from the life of George Maciunas from 1952 to 1978. Maciunas was the "Father" of the Fluxus movement, which has been referred to (in Harry Ruhé's book title) as "the most radical and experimental art movement of the 1960s." Entries from Mekas's diaries from the last year of Maciunas's life are read over images of Maciunas at his parents' home with friends (Warhol, Ono, Lennon, Almus); and fragments from Fluxus events. Local Fluxus member Carla Liss will present her Dove Cote (1973, c. 10 mins, Color, 8mm, From Artist), a beautiful, disorienting spatial exploration. A selection from Fluxfilms (1966 Fluxus edition), including works by Joe Jones, George Landow, George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, Shiego Shiomi, Paul Sharits, Wolf Vostell, and others, will be presented. Many of these artists are equally known for other artistic endeavors; as Dick Higgins famously wrote, "Fluxus is not a moment in history or an art movement," but "a way of doing things, a tradition, and a way of life." As part of the gallery exhibition Images and Ideas, a recent acquisition of Fluxus objects will be on display beginning November 17.
