Season Five

Rafi Pitts spins out an affecting tale of a village divided by a bitter feud. When Karamat insults Mehrbanou on their wedding day by refusing to pay for her dowry, he reignites a long-standing conflict between the two families. And when Mehrbanou's beloved father dies from the shock of the affront, turning the wedding into a funeral, Mehrbanou vows revenge. But events threaten to destroy the village, and Mehrbanou realizes she must sacrifice personal honor to save a rapidly vanishing way of life. As the emotional center of this lyrical and haunting film, Mehrbanou embodies the pride, grief, and fierce self-sufficiency that sustain the entire village. Shown with The Birth of Light (Abbas Kiarostami, Switzerland, 1997, 5 mins): A single, time-lapsed shot captures the brilliance of the morning sun above an Iranian mountaintop.
