The Second Time
This astute debut feature chronicles the psychological legacy of the volatile 1970s in Italy, when terrorist groups used violence on selected targets in an attempt to bring about social change. Nanni Moretti plays a Turinese professor, Alberto Sajevo, who suffers blackouts from the terrorist bullet still lodged in his brain. When one day Sajevo recognizes the woman who shot him twelve years earlier, he is shocked to realize that she doesn't recognize him. For Sajevo this first encounter brings forth all his isolation and obsession; violence is a strangely intimate act. With short: The Day of the Premiere of Close-up (Nanni Moretti, Italy, 1996), Abbas Kiarostami's Close-up (see PFA, May 24) premieres in the cinema run by actor/director Nanni Moretti.
