See You Off to the Edge of Town

Ching Ip's debut feature funnels sophisticated family drama into the conventions of a road movie as it follows the bittersweet story of a Chinese family's reunion and separation. The Kwan parents arrive from Hong Kong to embark on a road trip to the Grand Canyon with their U.S.-based daughters Jenny and Maggie. Unfortunately their car breaks down; even more unfortunately, their rescuer is Maggie's boyfriend, a man she met on the Internet who drives a baby-blue hearse with a red barbecue grill on top. Problems escalate, turning the family's different attitudes and values into confrontation and conflict. Tender yet unrelentingly critical, sentimental but never overtly melodramatic, the movie invites viewers on a joyride to see its characters off to the “edge” of sanity. Reconciliation and understanding are possible-just as the battered blue hearse can be magically fixed-when the pledge of familial love is constantly renewed.
