Selections from the 19th Black Maria Film and Video Festival

The Black Maria Festival honors the origins of motion picture making in America with Thomas Edison and his Black Maria film studio. An annual open competition for independent media artists, the Festival results in a highly varied and provocative collection of new works. Our program is culled from Festival director John Columbus's selections and winning works cited by the judges, Kavid Callahan, Kathy High, Jytte Jensen, Mark McElhatten, and Ana Ramos. It includes experimental and documentary work by artists familiar to PFA audiences-Ximena Cuevas, Joe Gibbons and Emily Breer, Leighton Pierce, Peter Rose; new to us-Jerome Bloom, Jason Livingston, Shanti Thakur, Tom Vennum, and Charles Weber; as well as two local artists, Cade Bursell and Machiko Saito.
