She Lives to Ride
There are no "biker chicks" in this high-octane documentary about women who love to feel the wind in their faces. Debunking stereotypes, She Lives to Ride features five women of different ages and backgrounds joined by an avid interest in motorcycling. At the center is the feisty Dot Robinson, an 82-year-old veteran of the road. Today Ms. Robinson rides a pristine pink Harley, but in the thirties and forties you would have found her a muddied but cheerful champion racer. She recounts the glorious two-wheeled adventures of her past-off-road racing where few women went-but is now content to keep within the speed limit as a member of the Motor Maids. Other profiles include Jo Giovannoni, co-founder of Women in the Wind, a national motorcycle club; Jacqui Sturgess, influential leader of The Sirens, a lesbian bike club in New York; and Amy Berry, an African American florist who's gone whole Hog. She Lives to Ride also offers a mini-history of women in motorcycling with newsreel footage and photos going back eighty years. Preceded by: Advice to Adventurous Girls (Kimberly Wood, U.S., 1996): The Bay Area filmmaker mixes her own autobiography with that of Lilly La France, a daredevil motorcyclist of the 1920s and thirties.
