Shirin Neshat Unveiled

Since winning the Golden Lion Award for best single entry at the Venice Biennale, Shirin Neshat has become the sensation of the art world. (She was a 2000 MATRIX artist at the BAM/PFA.) Iranian-born, Berkeley-educated Neshat's atmospheric video installations pulse with lyrical beauty, using image and song to illuminate complex dichotomies, both physical and emotional: men and women, religion and sexuality, Western and Middle Eastern culture, separation and inclusion. While drawing on elements of Islamic society, her work communicates universal passions, especially through its metaphorical visions of women in male-dominated worlds. This program of Neshat's later works includes the world premieres of three done this year. Passage (2001, 12 mins). Ballad of Intimacy (2001, 8 mins). Fetneh (2001, 10 mins). Turbulent (1998, 10 mins). Rapture (1999, 13 mins). Fervor (2000, 11 mins).
