Signore e Signori (The Birds and the Bees)

Pietro Germi (Divorce Italian Style, Sedotta e Abbandonata) gives us a worm's eye view of provincial dolce vita in his third comedy of morals. "The ladies and gentlemen (signore e signori) in question are the hypocritical middle class of northern Italy, and the action unfolds with a rigorous logic based on the absurd rules of provincial life" (Mira Liehm). Germi dissects the small northern town of Treviso in a three-part operation. Each episode depicts an hilarious flurry of sexual intrigue, over which a layer of prudent respectability inevitably descends. A case in point is the father who knows his under-age daughter is known in Treviso as man's best friend, but who allows himself to be shut up about it to save the town's "honor."
