The Silesian Gate

(Das Schlesische Tor) "Images and sounds of Berlin (at the 'Silesian Gate,' the last underground railway station before the Wall), of Tokyo (the suburb of Asakusa), and of Hong Kong (from the tram in Kowloon), and light and shade studies of my room in Berlin are mixed and blended together to the accompaniment of westernized Chinese music. The feeling of homesickness and wanderlust, of somewhere and nowhere...the feeling of the 'terribles cinq-heures du soir,' when one reaches for the bottle, for old letters or the telephone until the coming of the calming night. This little film is also intended to give the audience an awareness of the earth's roundness: morning in Asakusa is evening at the Silesian Gate...the course taken by the shadows round the earth."
