Lillian Gish plays Marfa, a Slavic beauty whose scheming aunt and uncle try to sell her into marriage to an ugly but wealthy peasant. The family emigrates to San Francisco, then Los Angeles, and there the schemers continue their evil efforts to sell Marfa to a rich husband.
