Some Kind of Genius

Some Kind of Genius, produced for Britain's Channel Four, is a lively film portrait of Hopper's Hollywood history from young studio player (whose models were Montgomery Clift, Marlon Brando and friend James Dean) and outcast actor (appearing in independent and low-budget productions) to maverick filmmaker (following the success of Easy Rider)-all told by Hopper himself. Among the many anecdotes is his famous battle with Henry Hathaway during the production of From Hell to Texas which resulted in an eight-year "blacklist" from Hollywood films. At odds with Hathaway's style, Hopper refused instruction and did 64 takes of the same scene! Still photographs from Hopper's thirty-year career punctuate his recollections.
