Song of China

Here's an oddity indeed, a completely silent Chinese feature made in the mid-thirties, and imported and released here by Douglas MacLean, a noted silent American comedian and later producer. While essentially Chinese in theme, dealing with parental sorrows at sons who turn out badly, it has a look about it that suggests the Chinese were quite envious of Hollywood. Despite obvious economy, it has a lush visual style, while the plot covering several generations is pure Hollywood/Edna Ferber of the period. With English subtitles, and a musical score. William K.
