Spare Me

Plus rare, unusual and striking artifacts of life in the gutter. Free bowling passes courtesy of Albany Bowl! Curated by Brian Gordon and Steve Seid. "When you hear thunder, God is bowling." Tonight, we spare no expense in celebrating the sport that gets people off the streets and into the gutter. You'll see rarely shown shorts about bowling, such as Brunswick's color-coordinated alleys; a mini-history of the televised sport from the National Bowling Hall of Fame; a striking sixties music video with, yes, Claude Bolling; celebrity bowlers; and just outside the frame, aural delights from related pinheads, including the infamous "Bowling Alley Oop." The evening's real trophy is the premiere of Matthew Harrison's well-framed feature, Spare Me, the twisted story of an outlaw bowler, Theo, suspended from the pro tour for assaulting a fellow competitor. Hoping to be reinstated, he tracks down his absentee dad, the legendary Buzz Fazeli, an orange-whip addict. Before he knows it, Theo's been sucked into a bowling scene lorded over by a corrupt alley-owner who's running illegal scams. Top-ranking humor, a pyromaniac love interest, and mayhem amid the pinsetting machines: Spare Me will bowl you over.-Steve Seid
