Speedy

Shot on location in New York City, and featuring Babe Ruth in one of his three feature-film appearances, Speedy follows Lloyd's comic efforts to save New York's last horse-drawn streetcar line from extinction. The plot obviously opens infinite avenues for speed gags, but it is also considered to be one of Lloyd's most genuinely sentimental films. William K. Everson writes, “Harold Lloyd's last silent was sure-fire: disappearing trolley-cars, a baseball-mad hero, a lengthy guest appearance by Babe Ruth, and a slam-bang chase climax through the streets of New York. Although not one of his very best films, it's nevertheless a fine climax to his silent period. The prints prepared for the t.v. re-release of the Lloyd films were all cut or altered in some way, and this film was shorn of one of its most touching scenes. Fortunately, our print is of the full version.”
