The Spooky Bunch (Zhuang Dao Zheng)

In her most sheerly pleasurable film, Ann Hui marries the spirit of the jump cut to comedy for a quicker-than-the-eye ghost thriller set against a backdrop of Cantonese opera. No sooner has a rag-tag opera troupe unfurled its banners on Cheung Chau island than it finds itself host to a pesky female spirit called Catshit. At first merely disgruntled because she can't find a seat, Catshit proves to be the harbinger of a whole army of ghosts ruthlessly avenging a crime perpetrated by the ancestors of the troupe's leading lady, Ah Gee (Siao Fong-Fong). "The collage of colorful grand guignol is irresistible, and so are the running jokes. It's a lightweight story given brilliantly wholehearted treatment" (Nigel Andrews, London Film Festival).
