The Stan Hasselgard Story (Ake Hasselgard story)
“When I was seventeen I bought a clarinet and taught myself Ake Hasselgard's solos by heart. I wanted to be like him, look like him. Instead, I made a film about him. I usually say that this film is an American dream of success that became a Swedish tragedy” (Jonas Sima). Sima's fond tribute to jazz clarinetist Ake Hasselgard--who called himself “Stan” in his American club dates--may introduce this “be-bop king” of the forties to some viewers, but jazz afficionados will know him as a legendary figure of forties jazz whose life was cut short in a car crash in America in '48, when he was 26. Those who knew him and worked with him--like Benny Goodman, who launched his career as a soloist in America--tell it their way in this fine compilation of interviews, documentary footage, and, of course, music.
