In 1929, two years after the first commercially successful sound film, many film aestheticians were still convinced that the addition of sound was the ruination of film as an art. Walt Disney's early sound cartoons, however, demonstrated not only the Disney studio's graphically inventive animation techniques but the electrifying effect of a witty, sophisticated use of music and sound effects in perfect synchronization with the image. (Barn Dance, another early Disney cartoon featuring Mickey Mouse, was on the original Film Society program, but it is not currently in distribution.) MF
