Stilt Dancers of Long Bow Village and Small Happiness: Women of a Chinese Village

Stilt Dancers of Long Bow Village
Banned for almost ten years during the Cultural Revolution, the Chinese art of stilt dancing is being revived in the rural villages where it was a part of life. Carma Hinton and Richard Gordon's award-winning documentary captures a festival in one rural village, from preparation to performance, against a background of indigenous music and the villagers' personal memories of the tradition. The White Bone Demon, the Monkey King, brides and villains are among the figures from myth, history and village life portrayed in the performances--which range from a traditional butterfly-catching dance to an original satire on the Gang of Four.
