Because it’s an institution created to make sales.” Frederick Wiseman’s first color documentary is a study of conspicuous Christmastime consumption at the Neiman Marcus flagship location and corporate headquarters in Dallas, with its hard-working retail staff and buyers serving the gift-purchasing and oil-rich denizens of Texas. This proves to be an apt window into 1980s America, “a subtly informative—and incidentally entertaining—tract that will likely be of sociological importance for generations to come” (Arthur Unger, Christian Science Monitor).
