Stormy Weather

Bill “Bojangles” Robinson stars in this film based on his own life. He plays an aging tapdancer who reminisces about his past performances and loves, thus providing, in flashback, a stage for Lena Horne, as his girlfriend, Selina, and other performers including Fats Waller (“Ain't Misbehavin'”); a zoot-suited Cab Calloway; Dooley Wilson; the innovative, African and Latin-based choreography of the Katherine Dunham Dancers; and the fabulous Nicholas Brothers, who combine tap dancing with acrobatics and almost steal the show. Robinson himself still taps up a storm in this film which, like Cabin in the Sky, provided Hollywood another “easy” way to employ black artists--as joyful entertainers--but which remains a singularly entertaining opportunity to see these legendary artists in action.
