The Strange Case of Angelica

In Memory of Manoel de Oliveira (1908–2015)

One of the final films from the long career of director Manoel de Oliveira (whose films BAM/PFA showcased in 2008) tells the story of a metaphysical passion that defies reason. The death of beauty, the passage of time, and the traditions of the past are all elegized in this fantastical tale of a young man who falls in love with a recently deceased young woman. Bold and daring, whimsical and dramatic, de Oliveira pushes boundaries and takes risks in this painterly and precise film, a testament to de Oliveira’s lifelong experience and experimentation with the medium.
