Strangers and Kin

Featuring Latter Day Barbarians and Noble Savages, Yesterday's People and Enemies of Progress, Mountaineers and Modernizers: a history of the Hillbilly image in American culture. Strangers and Kin derives a potent effect from juxtaposing film and t.v. clips, with their painfully un-funny jokes on a "know-nothing" culture, with the response of contemporary Appalachians to these stereotypes of mountain people. They talk about the very real tensions within a traditional community struggling to embrace modernity without becoming "strangers to their kin."
