Strategic Air Command

Half the brass of the U.S. Air Force turned out for the New York premiere of Strategic Air Command in 1955, and with good reason: the film was their baby. New York Times reviewer Bosley Crowther proudly noted at the time: “Credit, first, the Air Force, which made available the equipment, personnel and installations that are shown to such advantage in this film.... (Its) all star performers--the great B-36 propeller planes, the new B-47 jet bombers and the nexus of bases and fields are truly the most photogenic and exciting things to be seen....” Shot in “VistaVision,” S.A.C. boasts some of the best aerial photography of any Hollywood film. It also boasts Jimmy Stewart as the big-league baseball star who finds at a critical point in his career that there exists yet a bigger league; his summons back into the Air Force is an offer he can't hope to refuse. June Allyson plays his pregnant wife, who does not shrink from scolding Air Force Generals (including Frank Lovejoy, who chews his cigar suspiciously like General LeMay), but who eventually sees things their way.
