The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg

“After his string of successful sex comedies (So This Is Paris, The Marriage Circle, Forbidden Paradise, etc.), Ernst Lubitsch applied his ‘touch' to The Student Prince. Previously incarnated as a play, an operetta, and a D. W. Griffith project, the plot centers around the exploits of sheltered Prince Karl Heinrich (Ramon Novarro) who, through the kindly offices of his wise tutor Dr. Juttner (Jean Hersholt), gets to experience how the other half lives. While living the beer-drinking, Teutonic collegiate life, the Prince inevitably falls in love with a hopelessly inappropriate bar-maid, Kathi (Norma Shearer). Although The Student Prince is a relatively mellow Lubitsch film, his visual style and wit shine through. To create maximum atmosphere, Lubitsch shot all the exteriors on location in old Heidelberg. As Herman Weinberg observes in The Lubitsch Touch, ‘...Lubitsch turned the sentimental edelkitsch with its odes to beer and young love, its obeisance to hallowed traditions...into a real Lubitsch film.'” Sally Syberg
