Subject/Object
Ranging from subversive documentary to explicit performance, these works investigate the possibilities and limits of representing both self and other, often overtly implicating maker and viewer alike in the act of image capture. Delicate Issue is an early video work in which the surfaces of the body provide the ground for an interrogation into the nature of self-revelation and spectatorship, while Die Dyer incorporates dance and theater in an elliptical narrative about an artist's experiment in surveillance and control. Object/Subject of Desire is an arch performance tape that moves from romantic clichés to outspoken assertion of sexual desire between women. 99 Men is a disarmingly simple work on the stereotypical notion that "all Asians look the same," while Somalia Yellow is an arresting piece made by a combat artist with the Canadian military in Somalia. A Prayer for Nettie is a still photographer's eulogy for his elderly model, a relentless portrait of a strangely dignified world.
