Super

Super is the third feature in Adolf Winkelmann's trilogy of offbeat films about folks on the outside trying not to look in, on the run from Europe's increasingly industrialized and dehumanized society. (On the Move, his first comedy feature, was presented at PFA in October '79.) In Super, this theme takes a turn toward science fiction with a distinct nod to the European-based thriller. The setting is a gas station somewhere in the industrial desert of Europe, sometime in the post-apocalyptic future. With no highway running by it, the waystop is useless to its caretakers, Kubella and Fana, who have taken to trafficking in people, facilitating quick and expensive exits to the South Sea Islands for an assortment of misfits who, for various reasons, must depart. Their code word: Super. Road Warrior without the road, Casablanca without the casa, in the end it's uniquely Winkelmann, as this filmmaker's fans will be glad to know.
