The Super-8mm Films of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha

Tonight we offer a rare opportunity to view Theresa Cha's super–8mm films, including sketches for completed works such as Exilée, Permutations, and Passages Paysages, as well as camera experiments and short documents of friends and her time in France. Among her completed works, the lyrical and expressionistic Translations from a Willow Tree and Ripples reveal that the haunting explorations of language, exile, and film history that permeate all of Cha's art work are central also to her films. Her mostly untitled super–8mm rolls range from performances for the camera to documents of sculptural pieces and fragments. Together they expose her sensitivity to the unique properties of super–8. In a letter, Cha wrote of Translations from a Willow Tree: "i cannot describe it too well, it's quite different from anything else i have done before; combining image with words that are dealing with space looking in from outside and vice versa. i have been interested in those elements, and i hope more consciously considered and resolved." Join us in viewing this selection of intimate images from an artist who was viewing, studying, making, and revising films at UC Berkeley.
