A cross between You Can't Take It With You and The Philadelphia Story (thoughadmittedly the equal of neither), Swedenhielms is an engaging comedybuilt around the feckless family of an eccentric inventor. Whilewaiting for Papa to win the Nobel Prize, his two sons drain thehousekeeper's kitty and patience, until eventually the whole family isinvolved in a moneylending scandal. Ingrid Bergman is the kittenish andmoneyed fiancée of one of the sons to whom all this poverty is apuzzle and a bother. It is when we first see her, in an overhead shot,lying on a divan and giggling sweetly into the telephone, that we knowthat the film was directed by her mentor and obvious admirer, GustavMolander. Gösta Ekman plays the dottering inventor a year beforehe would appear as Bergman's lover in Intermezzo.
